HH: Mining Growth Should Not Harm Environment
By Sharon Siame
President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA says the country’s target to meet the THREE million metric tonnes of copper production yearly should not compromise environmental safety.
President HICHILEMA says there is need to exploit the country’s natural resources for the benefit of citizens, but that this should be conducted in a responsible manner and not to damage the environment.
He said this at State House in Lusaka today when he met Chairperson of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, HELEN CLARK.
President HICHILEMA also said there is need to pay attention to how the extractive industry contributes to economic development.
He further said Zambia supports the mandate of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative and wants to collaborate with the Organization to improve the processes in the extractive industry.
And Ms. CLARK said the mission of the organization is to implement transparency and disclosure so that countries have a better oversight of the flow of payments.
Meanwhile, Mines Minister, PAUL KABUSWE said the Geological and Minerals Development Bill, which is at third reading in Parliament alongside the Minerals Commission Act will ensure transparency in the Mining Sector.
