Kafue River Acid Plumes Addressed with Lime Spraying
By Patricia Banda
Over a hundred-kilometer stretch of the Kafue River has been sprayed with lime to stop the spread of acid plumes.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Peter Kapala says this is after acid plumes were identified between Ngabwe and Mumbwa districts on the Kafue River.
In a telephone interview with ZNBC News, Mr. Kapala explained that the acid plumes are coming from the contamination of the Kafue River by Sino Metal Tailings in Chambeshi from the Copperbelt Province.
He explained that a joint team of the Zambia Air Force, Zambia Police, and the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) are conducting the exercise.
He added that three Zambia Air Force planes and boats have been used in the exercise because the water on the Kafue River is faster.
Mr. Kapala further explained that the team will continue with the exercise tomorrow on the swamps and the banks of the Kafue River where the water is a bit slower.
