Former KASAMA Member of Parliament, KELVIN SAMPA has been detained by Police in connection with a case of obtaining money by false pretences amounting to US$80,000.
Mr. SAMPA has been detained with two other suspects.
Police Spokesperson, RAE HAMOONGA says a 62 year old Japanese National and businessman SATOSHI SAKAMOTO lodged a complaint to the police alleging that, Mr. SAMPA while acting together with other accomplices fraudulently obtained the money under the pretext of facilitating the sale of gold.
Mr. HAMOONGA says according to the complaint, between August and September 2024, Mr. SAKAMOTO was approached by Mr. SAMPA through a mutual acquaintance, Mr. KUNIHIRO FUGISHIMA a Japanese-Tanzanian national.
He says upon arrival in Zambia, Mr. SAMPA convinced Mr. SAKAMOTO that the gold sellers were dangerous criminals and advised him to hand over the money for safekeeping to which Mr. SAKAMOTO complied.
Mr. HAMOONGA however says the transaction was never completed, and attempts by the complainant to retrieve his money were met with excuses such as the money was locked in a safe.
He said in a statement to ZNBC news that upon legal intervention, Mr. SAMPA agreed to open the safe in his vehicle on October 3, 2024, but it was discovered that the contents were 49 pieces of fake 100 US Dollar notes and paper cuttings.
Mr. HAMOONGA further said that the Police search at Mr. SAMPA’s residence in Ibex Hill yielded no additional results.
He further revealed that Mr. SAMPA, Mr. FUGISHIMA and Mr. MARTIN MABO of Chudleigh who posed as a fake witness, have since been detained.
Mr. HAMOONGA said the suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
