Land Alliance backs amendment of Lands and Deeds Registry Act
By Mary Kachepa
The Zambia Land Alliance -ZLA- says Cabinet’s approval to amend the Lands and Deeds Registry Act that was enacted in 1914 will help reduce corruption in land administration.
Alliance Executive Director PATRICK MUSOLE has praised Cabinet for the approval in principle to amend the Law that was enacted over one 110 years ago.
Mr MUSOLE says the needs and priorities of citizens are different and amendment of the law is long overdue.
Mr MUSOLE said currently only the Courts have power to cancel land titles for fraudulently aquired land which takes years to be resolved due to backlog of cases.
He has appealed to Members of Parliament to support the Bill when it is taken before parliament for amendment and ensure that it responds to the evolving needs of Citizens.
Cabinet is of the view that the amendment will provide for an updated piece of legislation that will respond to the current needs and challenges faced in the registration of land and deeds.
