By Alice Lubasi
The Fisheries Department in Luapula Province and the Zambia National Service -ZNS- have collaborated to revitalise the fisheries sector in the Province.
This is aimed at transforming the region into the fish basket of Zambia and a key supplier to regional and international markets.
Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on the newly appointed Luapula Province Permanent Secretary, PRUDENCE CHINAMA, ZNS Chief of Fisheries and Livestock, MUTANDALIKE CHOONGA said the visit to Samfya aims to assess the Aqua-Park facility and explore ways to make it operational.
Brigadier General CHOONGA said the facility has the potential to change the face of Luapula and Zambia as a whole.
And Ms. CHINAMA expressed gratitude for the partnership, highlighting the province’s potential to lead the nation in fish production.
She said government is committed to reviving the fish industry, reintroducing lost species, and diversifying production to meet both local and international demand.
Meanwhile, Livestock and Fisheries Department Principal Aquaculture Officer, MARTIN MWALE said reviving the facility will not only reduce the reliance on imported fish but also create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and position Luapula as a leader in fish production.
This is according to a statement issued to ZNBC news in Lusaka today by Luapula Province Principal Public Relations officer EMMANUEL MASEKO.
