Lusaka traders warned against littering

Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata has warned of stiffer measures against traders in Lusaka Central Business District who are not adhering to hygiene standards.
Ms. Mulyata says this is in a bid to prevent loss of lives due to the outbreak of diseases such as cholera.
She says the government is concerned with the state of trading areas in the CBD, which can result in a cholera outbreak if left unaddressed.
Speaking during a stakeholder engagement in Lusaka today, Ms. Mulyata directed that bins and handwashing basins should be provided at every shop.
She further directed that shop owners, in conjunction with the Council, should restrict the selling of perishables such as fruits and vegetables in front of shops.
A trader from Town Centre, Opatrina Muzyamba, urged her fellow traders to work hand in hand with Lusaka City Council in keeping the surroundings clean.
Meanwhile, a trader from Kulima Tower, Christon Soko, called for the introduction of penalty fees for those who will be found littering the CBD.
Lusaka Mayor Chilando Chitangala said the local authority has been providing bins in the CBD, but the bins are vandalized.
