Mopani employees get 15% salary increment
Mopani Copper Mines has awarded its unionized employees a 15 percent salary increment across the board.
The National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) says it is the first time in many years that unionized workers at Mopani have received such a high salary increase.
NUMAW President Saul Simujika says the good government policies being implemented in the mining sector have started to yield benefits for the workers.
Mr. Simujika cited the miners in North Western Province, who were also awarded a 15 percent salary increase, as an example of the positive developments in the sector.
The Mine Workers Union has commended Mopani Copper Mines for awarding its unionized workers a 15 percent salary increase despite the challenges faced at the mine.
MUZ General Secretary George Mumba, however, urged the mining giant to prioritize safety at the mine.
Meanwhile, management at Mopani is pleased with the manner in which the negotiations were handled.
Chief Operations Officer Oscar Matebele expressed hope that the salary increment awarded to the workers will motivate them to achieve the targeted copper production this year.
