Amendments Must Serve Democracy, Not Election Cycles
By Hector Simfukwe & Chembe Mbale
Lusaka lawyer ZEVYANJI SINKALA says constitutional amendments should not be dictated by electoral cycles but by the necessity for good governance and promotion of democracy.
Mr. SINKALA says arguments that the timing is too close to the 2026 General Election cannot stand.
He says concerns that the amendments are designed to manipulate the electoral process remain unsubstantiated in the absence of a bill detailing specific changes.
Mr. SINKALA told ZNBC News that government has rightly recognized the necessity of constitution amendments as part of its broader strategy to improve governance and advance national development.
He said proposed reforms on proportional representation, the delimitation of constituencies, and the elimination of costly by-elections should be supported by all well meaning Zambians
And Life Gospel Ministries International General Overseer Bishop JOSEPH KAZHILA has described the ongoing debate regarding constitution reforms as healthy but called for unity of purpose for development.
In an interview with ZNBC News in Kitwe, Bishop KAZHILA emphasized the importance of unity and responsible social media use.
He called for the urgent need to put aside tribal, political affiliation and linguistic differences to foster a sense of national identity.
