“Mozambique’s insecurity is affecting the region”
President Hakainde Hichilema says the ongoing insecurity in Mozambique, resulting from the political impasse, is having far-reaching consequences for the region and Zambia in particular.
President Hichilema, who is the outgoing Chair of the SADC Organ Troika, says the instability is not only affecting the people of Mozambique but also hindering regional trade in critical sectors like energy and transport.
The President says that as members of the SADC community, Zambia firmly supports interventions aimed at restoring peace and stability in Mozambique.
President Hichilema says the notion that “instability anywhere is instability everywhere” resonates deeply, and that Zambia recognizes the importance of collective action in promoting regional security and cooperation.
President Hichilema made these remarks after participating in a virtual extraordinary Summit Plus to address the post-election political situation in Mozambique.
President Hichilema also mentioned that as SADC works towards a peaceful resolution in Mozambique, it must draw inspiration from past successes in promoting stability and democracy in the region.
He reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to the SADC objectives of socio-economic development, poverty eradication, and regional integration.
