One Dead, Several Animals Lost as Floodwaters Sweep Through Kanzungula
By Blessings Chibuye
Residents of Chileya in Kazungula District have been cut off following the submerging of Ngwezi Bridge.
A local resident, Josphat Munakondwa, says the incident has resulted in the death of one person and the loss of several animals that have been swept away by floodwaters.
However, the Zambia National Service (ZNS) says it will urgently address the flooding at the bridge to restore access.
ZNS Chief of Land Development Branch, Brigadier General Japhen Mukanda, says the service will engage the Road Development Agency (RDA) to explore the installation of an acrow bridge.
He was speaking at the flooded bridge during an inspection of Chileya Dam, where heavy rains have rendered the road impassable.
And ZNS Engineer, Lieutenant Michael Nkumbi, explained that Chileya Dam is a hybrid structure expected to store over 100,000 cubic meters of water.
Lieutenant Nkumbi said once completed, the dam will provide water for animal watering, horticulture, aquaculture, and domestic use.
