The Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board -HELSB- has awarded student loans to over 3,537 first year students at the Copperbelt University for the 2024/2025 academic year.
HELBS Corporate Communications Manager CHISELWA KAWANDA says the number of applicants from each province was based on the ratio of eligible applicants per province to the total number of applications.
According to a statement released to ZNBC News, Ms. KAWANDA said adjustments were made to ensure regions with lower allocations received a fair share, while also balancing awards across various schools.
She said HELSB received over 10,000 applications, with over 9,000 meeting the eligibility criteria, representing 93 percent.
Ms. KAWANDA said the remaining seven percent of over 600 applicants, did not meet the set criteria.
She said of the total applications, 41 percent were from rural districts, while 59 percent came from urban districts.
Ms. KAWANDA further noted that HELSB received 15 applications from students living with disabilities, two of which had already been awarded loans at other universities, while the remaining 13 were granted loans.
