By Christopher Miti
A 57-year-old man from Petauke District has been sentenced to 35 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a 15-year-old girl and infecting her with syphilis and HIV.
Thomson Zulu, a tailor from Kalando Village in Chief Mumbi, was committed to the Chipata High Court for sentencing by the Petauke subordinate court.
Particulars of the offence are that Zulu had carnal knowledge of the juvenile in 2022.
The victim told the court that the convict defiled her several times.
Chipata High Court Resident Judge Mercy Makubalo said the age gap and infecting the victim with syphilis and HIV were aggravating factors.
Judge Makubalo also sentenced a 50-year-old man from Chama District to 35 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling an eight-year-old girl.
Philip Nkhata committed the offence on May 15, 2023, and was found red-handed by his daughter, who was also a friend to the victim.
