REA to Deploy 2,000 Smart Meters for Kasanjiku Mini Hydro Power Plant Customers
By Ruth Chayinda
The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) will deploy 2,000 smart metering technologies for its customers of the 64-kilowatt Kasanjiku mini hydro power plant in Mwinilunga District.
REA Director of Engineering Services, Alex Mbumba, says the deployment of smart metering technology is a significant step towards achieving the goal of sustainable and efficient energy use.
Mr. Mbumba disclosed that currently, the plant serves 1,055 customers, with 813 already on the smart metering platform.
In an interview with ZNBC News, Mr. Mbumba said the smart metering technology on the power plant will serve as a model for other rural electrification projects across the country.
He said once commissioned, the deployment of smart metering will be rolled out to the 15 solar mini-grid stations under the authority.
Mr. Mbumba said the move will contribute towards promoting sustainable energy use and improving the quality of life for Zambians in rural areas.
