Revisit narratives of the independence struggle – NKUMBULA
By Cecilia Zyambo
The Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula Foundation says there is need to revisit narratives of the independence struggle and interrogate reasons why some freedom fighters have been forgotten.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka, Foundation Board Chairperson, OMPIE NKUMBULA-LIEBENTHAL said it is unfortunate that Zambia’s history has been written based on those who assumed leadership at independence.
Mrs. LIEBENTHAL said the contribution of others such as DONALD SIWALE, DAUTI YAMBA and JUSTIN CHIMBA, among others have been marginalized, distorted and forgotten.
She disclosed that for this reason, the Foundation in conjunction with the Southern African Institute for Policy and Research – SAIPAR- will hold a two day Conference from October 21 to 22, 2024 in Lusaka.
This will be under the theme ‘Forgotten Heroes and Heroines of Zambia’s INDEPENDENCE STRUGGLE.’
Mrs. LIEBENTHAL said the Foundation will also hold an exhibition of the struggle for independence at the National Archives in Lusaka on October 27, 2024.
