Rongxing Investments Mining Operations Suspended for Environmental Violations
By Fortune Sinyangwe
Government says mining operations at Rongxing Investments in Chambeshi on the Copperbelt will remain suspended due to non-compliance with environmental laws.
This follows alleged illegal operations by the mine despite having been shut down by the government due to continued pollution of the Luela stream.
Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe says the mine has not shown compliance with laws and regulations stipulated by ZEMA, WARMA, and the Mines Safety Department.
Mr. Kabuswe further disclosed that the mine has been found with all its tailing dams leaking, releasing acidic effluent into the stream and affecting hundreds of local people.
He said this after an inspection of the mine in the company of Water Development Minister Collins Nzovu and Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo.
Water Development Minister Collins Nzovu has also disclosed that all aquatic life in the Luela stream has been killed due to the pollution.
Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo said he will personally ensure that the mine is monitored by all the relevant wings of government so that it does not continue polluting the environment.
