Some Lawyers demand to be consulted by LAZ Before issuing statements on major national issues
Some Lawyers have demanded that the general membership of the Law Association of Zambia must be consulted before LAZ issues media statements on key national matters.
This was during 2024 Annual General Meeting held at AVANI Hotel in Livingstone.
Those who advanced the demand included MACQUEEN ZAZA, ERIC SAKALA and MULETA KAPATISO.
They argued that key national issues like the proposed Constitutional reforms required the consultation of the LAZ general membership before the lawyers body could give it’s position.
But other Lawyers who included State Counsel ABYUID SHONGA argued that it is impractical to consult the general membership each time a statement on national matters is to be issued.
LAZ President LUNGISANI ZULU said the LAZ council has a broader mandate to address issues of such concern.
However, Solicitor General MARSHALL MUCHENDE in his contribution said requests for consulting the general membership on key national matters before issuing a media statement was NOT asking for too much.
Mr MUCHENDE also urged the LAZ leadership to engage government in dialogue before resorting to legal action against the state.
He said dialogue would help resolve many disputes involving LAZ and government than always resorting to litigation.
