Tenants ask govt. to regulate rentals
The Landlords and Tenants Information Center has appealed to the government to regulate the pricing of rentals for housing units so that tenants are not exploited with exorbitant prices, as is currently the case.
The organization’s Director, Roban Muke, says some landlords are overpricing their housing units and exorbitantly exploiting tenants.
Mr. Muke expressed his disappointment during an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS).
He further bemoaned the huge amounts that people looking for accommodation to rent are charged by estate agents in the name of a “Viewing Fee.”
Mr. Muke also disclosed that his organization has received information that some landlords are prohibiting their tenants from using alternative sources of energy, such as gas stoves, fearing that their properties might catch fire.
He said the report is coming from the Copperbelt.
Mr. Muke has since expressed disappointment with some landlords, saying that they must understand the current power challenges the country is going through and the reasons people are using alternative sources of power.
