Traditional leaders advised to fight voter apathy
By Wilson Mulinda
Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- Chairperson MWANGALA ZALOUMIS has called on traditional leaders to champion the fight against voter apathy in rural areas.
Ms. ZALOUMIS says traditional leaders should also observe campaigns closely to ensure Fair Play for any election.
She says there is a need for chiefs and headmen to work with ECZ so that necessary action is taken against any individual involved in electoral malpractice.
Ms. ZALOUMIS was speaking when she opened an engagement meeting of traditional leaders in Kawambwa District on their roles in the electoral process.
Meanwhile, ECZ Commissioner Retired Major General VINCENT MUKANDA said the commission is counting on the influence and experience of traditional leaders to ensure peaceful polls in Kawambwa.
And Headman CHISEMBE, who represented Chief MUNKANTA, thanked ECZ for acknowledging and recognising the important role of traditional leaders during an election.
