Truck Drivers Association Urges Enhanced Highway Security Amid Attacks
By Cecilia Zgambo
The Southern African Truck Drivers Association has appealed for enhanced security on some highways in the country where members are getting attacked by armed criminals.
Association Zambia Chapter President Eugene Ndlovu has cited three spots: the Kapiri-Ngozi on the Kafue-Chirundu road, Munali Hills on the Mazabuka road, and the Chibuluma road in Kitwe on the Copperbelt.
Mr. Ndlovu has told ZNBC News that increasing the security presence in the affected areas will protect truck drivers from life-threatening attacks.
The appeal comes after armed criminals attacked the driver of a fuel tanker on the Kafue-Chirundu road over the weekend and robbed him of personal effects.
Meanwhile, Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga has confirmed the latest attack and identified the victim as John Samakayi, aged 55, who was driving a SHACMAN tanker truck.
Mr. Hamoonga says police have since intensified patrols in the area in order to enhance security for motorists, particularly truck drivers using this route.
