UPND demands Church Action on vulgar language
By Arnold Tutu
The United Party for National Development -UPND- has called on the Church to condemn the increasing use of vulgar language in Zambia’s political discourse.
The party has expressed concern over what it describes as a worrying trend of insults, particularly from a person calling himself “Why Me.”
UPND Media Director MARK SIMUUWE has urged the Church to take a firm and public stance against offensive language in politics.
Mr. SIMUUWE said this in a letter addressed to the three Church Mother Bodies -the Council of Churches in Zambia –CCZ, the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia –EFZ, and the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops –ZCCB.
He questioned the silence of the Church, especially after the individual in question allegedly insulted certain ethnic groups.
The UPND Media Director stated that such conduct not only goes against moral values but also threatens national unity.
The letter further called on Church leaders to provide moral guidance on the matter, stressing that their silence could be seen as approval of such behaviour.
Mr. SIMUUWE also noted with concern that some political leaders appear to endorse crude language, which he said is eroding the moral fabric of society.
The UPND has urged the Church to reaffirm its role in promoting peace, respect, and ethical leadership in Zambia by issuing a strong statement against vulgar language in politics.
