By Wilson Mulinda
The ruling UPND has scooped the Kawambwa Central Parliamentary by-election.
UPND candidate Nason Musonda polled 5,519 votes, beating his closest rival Danstan Mwansa of the New Congress Party, who managed 3,896 votes.
Socialist Party’s Kennedy Kapambwe came third with 1,501 votes, while UPPZ candidate Kennedy Chomba polled 185, and Movement for Change and Equity’s Peter Bwalya managed 68 votes.
Returning Officer George Biemba declared Mr. Musonda the winner in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The newly elected Member of Parliament becomes the first UPND MP in Luapula Province, which is largely dominated by the opposition Patriotic Front.
