Zambezi, Kafue Rivers record rise in water level
By Ruth Chayinda
Zambezi and Kafue Rivers have recorded a rise in water levels following the 2024 2025 rain season.
Recent data from over 169 surface water monitoring stations indicates an improvement in river flows compared to the same period last year .
Water Development and Sanitation Minister COLLINS NZOVU, however, says despite the improvement in water levels, the Zambezi and Kafue Rivers have reflected slow recovery due to the persistent low storage levels.
Mr NZOVU says this continues to pose a risk to national water security particularly in the area of hydropower generation .
He also revealed that despite Lake Kariba and Itezhi Tezhi reservoir recording encouraging flows of water levels ,the storage levels remain below expectation.
In a statement released to ZNBC News , Mr NZOVU said Lake Kariba currently stands at 10.98 percent down from 13.95percent recorded at the same time last year .
Mr NZOVU said the Itezhi Tezhi also shows similar levels to last year while Kafue Gorge has slightly improved .
The Minister has also assured that the ministry will continue to carry out surveillance of the nation’s water resources for accurate and timely information.
