By Alice Lubasi
The Zambian and Japanese Governments have signed a grant contract worth over 64,000 United States dollars equivalent to about 1.7 million Kwacha for the construction of a classroom block at Sianda Secondary School in Nalolo District of Western Province.
The contract also includes the provision of office furniture for the school.
This is under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, which is aimed at meeting the diverse needs of developing countries.
Education Minister, Douglas Syakalima, has praised the Japanese Government for coming up with such an initiative.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Mr. Syakalima said the initiative supplements the government’s efforts to ensure access to education for everyone.
Meanwhile, Japanese Ambassador to Zambia, Takeuchi Kazuyuki, said that with the implementation of the project, approximately 120 pupils will have access to indoor classroom learning experiences.
Nalolo Member of Parliament, Imanga Wamunyima, said the initiative will contribute to the improvement of primary and secondary education in his constituency.
Meanwhile, Sianda Secondary School Headteacher, Simutani Mukololo, said pupils at the school take lessons under trees due to a shortage of classrooms.
