Zambia Army to discipline recruits that engaged in Mufulira violence
By Masauso Mkwayaya
The Zambia Army has condemned some recruits in Mufulira from Tung Up Barracks who engaged in acts of violence in the Central Business District against civilians.
The incident resulted in injuries and damage to property.
Army Spokesperson SYDNEY MWEWA says the Army is mandated to serve and protect the people of Zambia and any actions that violate its mandate are unacceptable and will not be condoned.
In a statement to ZNBC News, Lieutenant Colonel MWEWA said reports indicate that three recruits were attacked by a group of taxi drivers in the Central Business District in Mufulira.
He said this resulted in one of them being injured and has since been admitted to Ronald Ross Hospital.
Lieutenant Colonel MWEWA said after one recruit was injured, the other two called for reinforcement from their fellow recruits, who consequently engaged in acts of violence and disturbances against civilians, resulting in injuries and property damage.
He said a thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to identify those responsible.
Lieutenant Colonel MWEWA said the perpetrators will face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with provisions of the Defence Act Chapter 106 of the laws of Zambia.
He has apologised to the affected individuals and communities for the incident.
Lieutenant Colonel MWEWA has however urged the public to co-exist with soldiers and refrain from provoking or harassing army personnel, especially Recruits who are just beginning to understand tenets of good soldiering.
He said provocative behaviour can lead to dangerous situations and undermine the trust between the Army and the public.
