Zambia to engage neighbours to tackle Locusts
By Ruth Chayinda
Zambia will engage neighbouring countries to help in eliminating the African Migratory locusts and red locusts that have infested some fields in the country.
Agriculture Permanent Secretary JOHN MULONGOTI says this is because some of the fields infested with red locusts lie along the border line.
Mr. MULONGOTI says to combat the infestation requires joint efforts by all member states.
The Permanent Secretary said this in Lusaka when he officiated at the Permanent Secretaries of Agriculture leadership Dialogue Championing Implementation event under the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme -CAADP.
He further said there is need for African countries to develop mechanisms that will enable the continent produce more food for the ever growing population without relying on outsiders.
Mr. MULUNGOTI however said for this to be actualised, countries should put resources together.
And African Union Commission Head of Rural Development, JANET EDEME said African Countries should strengthen leadership and coordination so that the continent becomes food secure.
Dr. EDEME said positioning Agri-food systems transformation at the core of Africa’s sustainable development journey will accelerate investments.
She said Permanent Secretaries are crucial in driving policy, aligning national strategies and creating an enabling environment for sustainable transformation.
