ZESCO Pilots Smart Meters to Improve Electricity Reliability
By Arnold Tutu
ZESCO Limited has launched a pilot project to install smart meters in Lusaka’s Roma and Kanyama townships.
The power company says this is part of efforts to enhance electricity reliability, reduce unplanned power outages, and improve billing accuracy.
ZESCO’s Director of Distribution and Customer Services, Hadley Habeene says the pilot project, which began on March 17, 2025, aims to provide real-time data on electricity usage and network performance, allowing for faster fault detection and response.
Mr. Habeene says the initiative will also help mitigate distribution losses by quickly identifying problem areas.
He told ZNBC news in a statement that the three-step project includes mapping all electricity meters, poles, and transformers, installing smart meters at key locations, and transitioning customers to a more efficient digital billing and payment system.
Mr. Habeene said the six-month pilot is being undertaken in partnership with Beacon Power Services –BPS- Ltd and, if successful, could be rolled out nationwide.
He has urged residents of Roma and Kanyama to cooperate with ZESCO teams, who will carry official identification with QR codes for verification and advised customers to report any concerns through official communication channels.
