
ZESCO to add 500MW of Solar Power to the Grid
ZESCO says about 500 Megawatts of electricity from various solar initiatives will be added to the grid soon.
The utility says of that target, 134 megawatts of solar electricity will be online in the next three months.
ZESCO Managing Director JUSTIN LONGO says this will be done to address Zambia’s electricity deficit, citing the impact of drought-induced hydroelectricity generation deficit.
Mr. LONGO has mentioned projects, including Chisamba to produce hundred megawatts, Mansa to produce twenty-five megawatts, Kasupe to produce seven point five megawatts and Shangombo to produce two megawatts.
He adds that the micro generator scheme and presidential solar initiative are expected to contribute 270 megawatts and 62 megawatts, respectively.
Mr LONGO also highlighted other initiatives, including net metering, smart grids, and mini-grids, to improve energy management and increase access to electricity.
Mr LONGO said this in a speech read on his behalf by ZESCO Divisional Manager GIVEN MONDE following the Third National Students and Youth Parliament in Lusaka yesterday.
He said ZESCO believes that Zambia’s energy future will be heavily influenced and propelled by creative, innovative, knowledgeable and skilled youth hence its support to the 2025 Third National Students and Youth Parliament.
National Council of Students Union -NACOSU- Chairperson MICHELO CHIZOMBE said the Youth Parliament which brought together young leaders from ten provinces to discuss pressing issues, including energy and law was aimed at fostering meaningful dialogue
and solution-based discussions among young people.
Mr CHIZOMBE noted the importance of young people preparing for leadership roles by taking deliberate steps to develop their skills and knowledge.
He further encouraged young people to be proactive in preparing for the future.
