Zambia Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele says the army is remorseful and wants to assure the people of Mufulira that it is committed to ensuring a peaceful environment in the district without intimidation.
Speaking during a courtesy call on Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo in Ndola, Lieutenant General Zyeele said army investigations into the Mufulira incident indicate that only twelve recruits were involved in the confrontation with the residents after provocation contrary to stories on social media.
He says that the army is aware that Mufulira district is seeing a rise in gangs and people dressing in suspected army regalia but that is something the army will not allow.
Lieutenant General Zyeele says the Zambia Army will continue working to protect the interests of the country such as fighting illegal immigration, and ensuring peace prevails on the Copperbelt..
Meanwhile, Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo is happy with the visit of the Zambia Army Commander on the Copperbelt a few days after the Mufulira incident.
Mr Matambo says the visit of the Army commander shows that President Hakainde Hichilema is concerned about what happened in Mufulira and wants to ensure the peaceful environment on the Copperbelt continues.
