The Chipata High Court has sentenced a 33-year-old man to 20 years imprisonment with hard labour for raping a 75-year-old woman.
Before Chipata resident Judge MERCY MAKUBALO was PATRICK ZULU who was committed to the High Court for sentencing.
In mitigation, senior Legal Aid Counsel CRIPPEN SIATWINDA said the convict was still young and had ample room for reformation.
Mr SIATWINDA said the convict was pleading with the court to exercise maximum leniency.
But Judge MAKUBALO said raping a 75-year-old woman by someone who is supposed to be her grandchild was a taboo.
And a 21-year-old man of Kasenengwa District has been sentenced to 7 years imprisonment with hard labour for attempted rape.
NEBERT NTHELE attempted to rape an 80-year-old woman.
Lusaka judge LASTONE MWANABO who is sitting in Chipata said the court took into consideration circumstances surrounding the matter.
Judge MWANABO also jailed LAMECK PHIRI of Nyimba District 20 years for defiling a seven-year-old girl.
In mitigation, defence Counsel KONDWANI MWALE who is offering probono services at the Legal Aid Board, said the convict takes full responsibility of his action and is remorseful.
But judge MWANABO said he considered the mitigation but noted that the victim was only seven-years-old and was traumatised by what happened to her.
