About 500 trucks are expected to be cleared and cross into the Democratic Republic of Congo at Kasumbalesa border by the close of business today. This is as per an agreement between Zambia and Congo yesterday.
Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Chipoka Mulenga says that as of 16 hours today, over 375 trucks had been cleared into the DRC through the three border posts shared by the two countries.
Mr. Mulenga says border agents for the two countries are expected to work up to 20 hours from 6 o’clock to reach the target of clearing 500 trucks per day from Zambia into the Democratic Republic of Congo through Kasumbalesa, Mokambo, and Sakania border posts.
He said this in a phone interview with ZNBC News.
Earlier, during an interaction meeting with the marooned truck drivers, Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo called on the Zambia Police to intensify security where the marooned trucks are to ensure no goods are stolen as the situation at the Kasumbalesa border continues to improve.
The two ministers indicated that the Zambian and DRC Governments expect all the marooned trucks to be cleared by Wednesday this week.
