100 smallholder farmers in Pemba get goats
NAIS- Over 100 smallholder farmers under the Kaba Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Pemba have benefited from the goat alternative livelihood under the Sustainable Intensification of Smallholder Farming Systems (SIFAZ) Project.
Southern Province Agricultural Coordinator, Alfred Sianjase, says the cooperative has been given a contract to supply 552 goats to the Ministry of Community Development for onward distribution to the community on a pass-on project.
Mr. Sianjase said from the initial 228 goats supplied to the Ministry of Community Development, Kaba Cooperative realized a total of K95,248.
He described the Agri-Business Livelihood activity under the SIFAZ project, supported by the European Union, as a boost in terms of injecting money into the economy within the community.
Kaba Multi-Purpose Cooperative Chairperson, Reymond Kanyama, said the cooperative plans to engage in mechanization by purchasing a tractor and agricultural implements once enough capital is realized from the goat project.
Pemba District Agricultural Coordinator, Robert Tembo, said that the cooperative was also trained in business and cooperative management.
