Zambia’s copper production has recorded a significant increase.
Mines and Minerals Development Minister PAUL KABUSWE says production has risen from 732,583 metric tons in 2023 to 820, 676 in 2024.
The Minister says the increase which represents a 12 percent rise was driven by exceptional performance at Lumwana mine which doubled its production and resumption of Operations and production at KCM and Mopani.
Mr. KABUSWE says the operationalization of Mimbula Mine added to the sector’s growth.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka, on the performance of Mining in 2024, Mr. KABUSWE said other mineral commodities whose 2024 production surpassed their 2023 include Nickel, gold and emeralds.
And Mr. KABUSWE said the Ministry also recorded an increase in the number of licences granted with mining and non-mining rights compared to 2023.
He said the number of Artisanal Mining Rights granted increased from 304 in 2023 to 680 in 2024 representing an increase of 124 percent.
Meanwhile, Mr. KABUSWE has expressed concern that there were 98 mine accidents in 2024 compared to 43 in 2023, attributing it to illegal mining activities.
