CTPD Calls for Increased Taxation on Tobacco Products to Protect the Youth
By Doreen Chembe
The Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD) has advised the government to increase taxation on tobacco-related products to deter young people from accessing the products.
CTPD Public Finance Management Researcher, Elijah Mumba, says according to the World Health Organisation, over 7,000 people die per year due to tobacco-related illnesses.
In an interview with ZNBC News in Lusaka, Mr. Mumba said the increase in taxation will also enable the government to realize much-needed revenue from the tobacco sector.
Mr. Mumba also revealed that the organization is currently in talks with Members of Parliament and line ministries over the tobacco control bill to help expedite the process of passing it into law.
