
Government Commits Over 4.8 Billion Kwacha to Airport Projects

The government has signed contracts with the Zambia National Service (ZNS) and Anhui Shui’an Construction Group Corporation Zambia Limited for the construction of a greenfield airport in Nakonde and the upgrading of Mfuwe International Airport.
The Nakonde Airport will be constructed by ZNS at a cost of over 2.8 billion Kwacha, with works to be completed within 36 months.
Transport and Logistics Minister Frank Tayali says the scope of works for the Nakonde Airport includes the construction of a greenfield Airport.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Mr. Tayali said the upgrade of the Mfuwe International Airport will be undertaken at a cost of over 2 billion Kwacha by Anhui Shui’an Construction Group Corporation Zambia Limited within 24 months.
He said the works will include the construction of a 3-kilometer new runway, taxiway, apron, and rehabilitation of the existing runway, among others.
Mr. Tayali has tasked officers under his ministry to ensure frequent monitoring of the construction works on both projects and ensure that funding is provided without delay.
Meanwhile, Ministry of Defence Acting Permanent Secretary Millicent Mwenda said ZNS will ensure that the works are of excellent quality and delivered within the contractual timeframe.
And ZNS Deputy Commander Major General Reuben Mwewa said the contract is another opportunity for ZNS to exhibit its ability to deliver top-notch works.
Anhui Shui’an Construction Group Corporation Zambia Limited Consultant Ian Banda said quality is a core value for the company, and that is what should be expected.
