Morocco to Collaborate with Zambia on Electric Vehicle Battery Production
By Sharon Siame
The Ministry of Commerce, Trade, and Industry says Morocco has expressed interest in collaborating with Zambia in the production of electric vehicle batteries.
Ministry of Commerce Director of Industry, Musokotwane Sichizuwe, says Zambia expects to have increased value addition as a result of this collaboration.
He says the country is pushing for more value addition in the electric vehicle battery space and that there is a need to play a more enhanced role.
Mr. Sichizuwe says this will help create jobs and generate tax revenues.
He, however, notes that there are significant challenges for Zambia to fully participate in the electric vehicle sector, such as a lack of skills and technology.
Mr. Sichizuwe said this during a stakeholder engagement on fostering environmentally and socially responsible, decarbonized, inclusive, and transformative value chains for energy transition minerals in the SADC region in Lusaka today.
Meanwhile, WWF Zambia Country Director Naluha Ziba said the organization, in collaboration with a consortium led by the Economic Commission for Africa, has introduced a program that will focus on developing a regional policy framework for environmentally sound and socially responsible raw material extraction and processing.
United Nations Economic Commission for Africa Chief of Inclusive Industrialization Subregional Office for Southern Africa, Olayinka Bandele, said the project implementation will start in January 2026.
