Govt Stresses Importance of Shoebill Protection for Muchinga Tourism
The government has emphasized the protection of the shoebill bird as it is critical to Muchinga Province’s tourism sector.
Speaking during a tour of the Bangweulu Wetlands, where the rare bird is commonly found, Tourism Minister Rodney Sikumba stressed that harming the shoebill will have environmental and economic consequences.
The shoebill’s unique appearance and elusive nature make it a major attraction for birdwatchers and eco-tourists, particularly in Zambia’s northern circuit.
The bird is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to habitat destruction and poaching.
Mr. Sikumba has urged local communities to embrace conservation programmes that promote sustainable tourism and provide economic opportunities through eco-friendly initiatives.
He assured that the government, in partnership with conservation organizations, is working to protect the wetlands and ensure local communities benefit from tourism revenue.
This is according to a statement released to ZNBC News by the Ministry of Tourism Principal Public Relations Officer, Nelly Banda.
