By Masauso Mkwayaya
A youth cooperative involved in tailoring in Chama District, which received a 15,000 Kwacha grant under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) empowerment component, has increased its profits from 800 Kwacha per month to more than 2,000 Kwacha.
Cooperative Chairperson Isaac Kumwenda says the group, which consists of 10 youth members, accessed the funding last year.
Mr. Kumwenda told ZNBC News that the group specializes in making uniforms that are sold in the district.
He added that the uniforms are also taken to villages, where parents who can’t afford them exchange maize, goats, and other agricultural produce.
Mr. Kumwenda has thanked the government for the empowerment.
Chama Town Council Social Economic Planner Isaac Nyimba said 102 business grants have been given to cooperatives and clubs in Chama North Constituency, and 59 have been given in Chama South Constituency under the 2025 allocation.
Mr. Nyimba said 3.9 million Kwacha has been allocated towards the exercise.
He mentioned that the grants have been given to groups involved in poultry, agro-business, rice production, retail, tailoring, and carpentry, among others.
