Poachers Kill White Rhino in Mosi-O Tunya National Park
Poachers have killed a young White Rhino in the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park in Livingstone.
The poaching occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, March 11th, between 02:00 and 03:00hrs.
Ministry of Tourism Principal Public Relations Officer NELLY BANDA says the Poachers infiltrated the park under the cover of darkness, fatally shooting the three-year-old rhino before fleeing with its horns.
Ms. BANDA said authorities have since launched an intensive investigation to track down those responsible.
She has described the killing as a severe blow to Zambia’s conservation efforts.
Ms BANDA said the loss of the rhino leaves only nine White Rhinos in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, further threatening the already fragile population.
Ms BANDA said in response, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife has intensified night patrols and reinforced security measures for the remaining rhinos.
And Ms. BANDA has urged the public to report any information that may lead to the arrest of the poachers.
