ABSA marathon attracts 100 elite Athletes

Over 6,500 participants are expected to take part in the 2024 ABSA Marathon whose  budget is set at 6.5 million Kwacha.

Speaking during the launch of the 2024 Marathon, ABSA Bank Managing Director MIZINGA MELU said a 45,000 Kwacha cash prize will be given to the overall winners in the various categories.

MELU said this year’s marathon is also expected to attract 100 elite athletes from various countries while a 50,000 Kwacha has also been set aside for the locals as prize money during the marathon.

She said for this year, they are working to get a bronze certification from the World Athletics that will see the Marathon registered as a global event.

And, Sports Minister ELVIS NKANDU has thanked ABSA Bank for the investment in Sport as they have made the marathon the biggest sporting event in the country.

NKANDU has since called on Zambians from all walks of life to ensure that they  take part in the marathon as it has the potential to empower and transform lives.

Meanwhile, Zambia Athletics President ELIAS MPONDELA said an official from world Athletics will be in attendance to ensure that all standards are met before the ABSA Marathon is given a bronze certification.
