ECZ challenges women in Petauke to denounce violence
By Joy Nyambe
Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Chairperson, Mwangala Zaloumis, says women of Petauke Central Constituency have a golden opportunity to set a precedent by advocating peace and denouncing violence, which has occurred in some past elections.
Ms. Zaloumis made the call ahead of the upcoming by-election in Petauke Central Constituency, set for February 6, 2025.
Ms. Zaloumis has appealed to women to say no to violence at all costs.
She says women should instead be ambassadors in promoting peace in the electoral process, rather than perpetrating violence.
Ms. Zaloumis says embracing tolerance over political tension can be achieved by peaceful dialogue across all political fronts led by women.
She said this in Petauke today when she opened the first-ever Women’s Conference organized by the ECZ, which has attracted women from political parties, civil society organizations, and faith-based organizations.
Ms. Zaloumis also expressed concern about the low numbers of women participating in the electoral process.
She said the Commission wants to see increased women participation in the electoral process and enhanced involvement of women in decision-making processes.
