By Lupindula Mwewa
Enterprise Power Zambia will this year set up a 330 Kilovolt Kalumbila-Kolwezi Interconnection Project – KKIP aimed at boosting power supply to the mining region of Kolwezi District in the Democratic Republic of Congo – DRC.
The company will spend 250 million United States Dollars on the 190 Kilometer grid extension project with two thirds of the project to be hosted in Zambia.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony in Kalumbila, Managing Director EMMANUEL KALENGA said the interconnector project will close the gap of power challenges for both countries.
Mr KALENGA said this is a sign that Zambia is capable of finding solutions to the power challenges that are being faced in the country.
And DRC Minister of Electricity and Hydraulic Resources representative THIERRY SAMBA said his government is looking forward to more collaboration with Zambia in the energy sector.
Meanwhile, North Western Province Council of Chiefs Chairperson Chief MUMENA says there is need to explore power generation options in the province.
The traditional leader says the Province has potential to generate electricity that can be exported to neighbouring countries.
