
Green 2000 Agriculture Project Transforms Farming in Kawambwa

Over 1,000 small-scale farmers have benefited from farming equipment provided by the multi-million-dollar Green 2000 project in Kawambwa District, Luapula Province.
Additionally, the Green 2000 Agriculture Project has created over 2,000 jobs for the local community in Kawambwa.
The $43 million agriculture project aims to position Zambia as one of the grain baskets contributing to food stability in the SADC region.
Project Manager Gerrie Beukes stated that, so far, 500 hectares of soya bean fields and 580 hectares of seed maize fields have been cultivated out of the 2,500-hectare farm project.
He added that another 1,025 hectares are under irrigation, utilizing 16 center pivots, each covering 65 hectares.
Mr. Beukes noted that with electricity expected to be available within the next six weeks, more hectares of land will be developed.
Mr. Beukes made these remarks during an interview with ZNBC News in Kawambwa.
Meanwhile, some beneficiaries have expressed gratitude, stating that the Green 2000 Project is significantly improving lives in Kawambwa District.
Delgracious Chungu, one of the project workers, shared that she previously struggled to make ends meet but is now able to support her family.
Similarly, Ruth Nandazi, a recipient of agricultural equipment, mentioned that she has expanded her farming operations to 10 hectares, thanks to the support from the Green 2000 Project, a significant improvement from the small-scale limas she managed before.
