Petauke Central Member of Parliament EMMANUEL BANDA has escaped from lawful custody in Chipata.
Home Affairs and Internal Security JACK MWIIMBU says Mr. BANDA is said to have escaped on Sunday night around 22:00 hours while being guarded at Chipata General Hospital where he was receiving medical attention.
Mr. MWIIMBU says preliminary investigations have revealed that Mr. BANDA escaped through a window, after his wife LOMBE BANDA requested police and correctional officers for privacy as her husband wanted to use the bathroom.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka today, the minister said Mr. BANDA was admitted to Chipata General Hospital for treatment of hernia, and medical experts recommended salt therapy to help cure the condition.
Mr. MWIIMBU said police have since launched a manhunt for Mr. BANDA.
He has also directed the Zambia Police Service to ensure that they find Mr. BANDA and put him back in lawful custody until he completes his court case for aggravated robbery.
Mr. MWIIMBU said the five officers that were on duty are in custody as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the Minister has also challenged former President EDGAR LUNGU to be truthful and avoid tarnishing the name of President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA.
Mr. MWIIMBU said Mr. BANDA has not had his leg amputated and dismissed all accusations of ill treatment as purported by the opposition.
