Major BWALYA elected new Zambia Athletics president
By Mike Mwendachabe
Major BERNARD BWALYA has been elected as the new President of Zambia Athletics, edging out former General Secretary DAVISON MUNG’AMBATA in a dramatic tie-breaker.
Both candidates received 46 votes each out of the 92 cast during the elective general meeting.
The deadlock triggered a Constitutional provision, allowing the Electoral Commission’s Chief Presiding Officer, JOSEPH MBEWE, to cast a final, deciding vote randomly.
That crucial vote went to BWALYA, handing him the Presidency.
Earlier in the day, fellow contender KENNEDY MUBANGA withdrew from the race and threw his support behind BWALYA, a move that may have tipped the scales.
BWALYA will now lead Zambia Athletics for the next four years.
Earlier Sports Minister ELVIS NKANDU said governance is crucial for the success of Zambia Athletics in the country.
NKANDU said the integrity of athletics administration is key to attracting investment, sponsorship, and international recognition.
