Zambia and Botswana to Establish Electricity Interconnector
By Rosemary Kamanga
Zambia and Botswana have committed to establishing an electricity interconnector to promote energy sustainability in the region.
The proposed interconnector will establish a high-voltage transmission line between the two countries, enhancing energy security and facilitating increased electricity trade within the SADC region.
Energy Minister Makozo Chikote stressed the urgency of developing a clear roadmap to expedite the implementation of the Botswana-Zambia Interconnector.
Mr. Chikote was speaking during a bilateral meeting with Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Kenewendo, on the sidelines of the ongoing SADC Sustainable Energy Week in Gaborone, Botswana.
Mr. Kenewendo stated that the proposed interconnector will play a pivotal role in achieving shared goals of energy security and self-sufficiency. He also revealed Botswana’s plans to extend its national grid to connect the northern regions of the country, ultimately linking to Zambia’s grid.
Meanwhile, Zambia’s High Commissioner to Botswana, Pamela Chisanga, pledged full support for facilitating the necessary Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
