The Smart Zambia Institute has begun the process of engaging an international partner to support the development of Zambia’s national digital identification system.
The project has entered a key implementation phase, with completion targeted for 2026.
The move to bring in an international partner is intended to strengthen local capacity as the country works towards delivering a fully functional and inclusive digital ID system.
The initiative is being implemented under the Digital Zambia Acceleration Project, supported by a 100 million United States dollar grant from the International Development Association -IDA.
The project aims to expand internet access and digitise public services across the country.
Smart Zambia Institute National Coordinator PERCY CHINYAMA says the system will be developed by Zambians, with technical support from the international partner, to ensure it meets the needs of all citizens.
Mr. CHINYAMA told ZNBC News that the digital identification cards are expected to improve service delivery and support economic growth by providing every eligible citizen with a verifiable digital identity.
He said the cards will perform functions similar to the National Registration Card, but with additional features, including use for travel, identification and access to both public and private sector services.
The government expects the digital ID system to improve inclusion, efficiency and access to opportunities as Zambia advances its digital transformation agenda.
