Government Condemns Violence at PF Secretariat

By Mark Ziligone
Government has condemned the political violence that occurred at the Patriotic Front -PF- Secretariat yesterday.
Chief Government Spokesperson and UPND Party Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa told journalists at press briefing in Lusaka that both government and party leadership were deeply disturbed by the violent conduct.
Mr. Mweetwa said the scenes recorded yesterday, involving individuals clad in UPND regalia storming the PF Secretariat, shocked the nation and do not reflect the values of the ruling party or government.
He stated that President Hakainde Hichilema and the entire UPND leadership had no knowledge, instruction, or blessing of the actions carried out by the perpetrators.
Mr. Mweetwa said the UPND does not subscribe to politics of violence and that the party was founded on the principles of peace, unity and rule of law.
He added that the UPND has since instituted investigations to establish the true identities of the individuals involved.
Mr. Mweetwa further called on the Police Service to urgently conclude their investigations and publicly reveal the real perpetrators and their motives, adding that Zambians expect the police to act swiftly and professionally.
The Chief Government Spokesperson reiterated that no political interference will be allowed in law enforcement processes, affirming that those found wanting must be held accountable under the law.
Mr. Mweetwa reminded the nation that the UPND, having been a victim of political violence in the past, remains committed to ensuring that Zambia continues on a path of peace especially as the country heads towards the 2026 General Election.
He also said the UPND has no interest in the internal wrangles within the Patriotic Front as issues regarding PF leadership, factions, or Secretariat operations remain internal matters of the opposition party.
