President Hakainde Hichilema has commissioned Phase One of the upgraded Nakonde One Stop Border Post, a project aimed at improving trade efficiency and revenue collection.
The new facility is equipped with modern scanners capable of clearing up to 60 trucks per hour.
Speaking during the commissioning in Nakonde, President Hichilema said Zambia has for years not fully utilised the economic potential of the Nakonde border, but the upgraded infrastructure will now boost trade volumes and revenue generation. He added that the revenue collected will support key government sectors such as education.
Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Chipoka Mulenga said the border post will eliminate trade barriers between Zambia and Tanzania, while also increasing revenue for clearing agencies.
Infrastructure Minister Charles Milupi thanked the British Government for supporting the project.
Muchinga Province Minister Njavwa Simutowe described Nakonde as a key trade gateway for Zambia and Tanzania.
TradeMark Africa Chief Executive Officer David Beer said the facility will strengthen cross-border trade and improve efficiency along the Dar es Salaam Corridor.
Meanwhile, British High Commissioner to Zambia Rebecca Terzeon emphasized that regional trade remains key to economic growth, adding that Zambia stands to benefit significantly.
