Government has urged greater private sector involvement in addressing soil acidity, which continues to pose a major challenge across Zambia’s agro-ecological zones.
Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo, in a speech delivered on his behalf by Zambia Agriculture Research Institute (ZARI) Director Dr. Ndashe Kapulu, said soil acidity undermines farmers’ productivity and limits their potential to earn better returns.
Speaking during the commissioning of the newly established Micronized Calcium Carbonate Granulation Plant in Chilanga District, Mr. Mtolo applauded Omya Idwala Zambia Limited for investing in the modern facility. The plant will produce granulated calcium carbonate (agriculture lime), which is easier to apply, more effective, and delivers faster results.
Mr. Mtolo added that the commissioning of the plant demonstrates the positive investment environment created by government under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema.
Meanwhile, Omya Idwala Zambia Managing Director Wayne Brown said the vision of the facility is to transform locally sourced raw materials into a high-quality agricultural product that will be sustainable and crucial in the transformation of Zambia’s agriculture sector.
