Over 500 households in Livingstone West and Nasanzu camps have had their maize fields attacked by swarms of short-horned grasshoppers, while more than 100 hectares have also been affected by army worms.
Livingstone West Camp Agriculture Assistant Francis Sikankwanda confirmed the situation, noting that although government has been supplying pesticides, controlling the grasshoppers remains difficult as they spread beyond crop fields into surrounding grasslands.
Headman of Sibusenga Village, Fred Sibusenga, reported that over 40 households in his area have been affected.
Meanwhile, local farmer Agness Kabenga has appealed to government to urgently assist farmers before they completely lose their maize crop.
